Abstract: Herbal medicines are gaining popularity in recent decades. To validate their use as therapeutic agent, in vitro and in vivo scrutinization is done. Tea tree oil (TTO), is one such product under scutiny.Tea tree oil is the volatile essential oil derived from the Australian native plant Melaleuca alternifolia. It is used for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Many topical formulations use tea tree oil as the active ingredient to treat cutaneous infections. It is marketed as a remedy for various ailments in countries like Australia, Europe, and North America. Also, Tea tree oil is used as antimicrobial agent in pharmaceutics and cosmetic products like hand and face washes, shampoos and skin care products. This review discusses the properties of tea tree oil and its applications
